North Andover spreads across a wide area of the Merrimack Valley, with a denser pattern of streets in the north near the mill city of Lawrence and a more open, wooded landscape to the south. Older roads run out from the centre in irregular lines, as they do in many New England towns that grew from farm tracks rather than a planned grid.
Water is the most striking element on the map. Lake Cochichewick, the town’s drinking water supply, lies in the northern part of town as a long, pale shape bordered by conservation land.
