Nova Hartz is in Rio Grande do Sul, in the Vale dos Sinos region north of Porto Alegre. The town lies at the foot of the hills that rise toward the Serra Gaúcha, and from above its streets stretch across the lower ground while green slopes rise sharply behind them.
The area was settled by German immigrants in the nineteenth century, and the name reflects that origin. Like its neighbours in the valley, Nova Hartz developed a strong footwear and leather industry, with factories and workshops that remain an important part of local life.
