Novi Sad lies on the Danube in northern Serbia and is the capital of the autonomous province of Vojvodina. On a map the city spreads across the flat Pannonian plain on the river's left bank, while Petrovaradin and its fortress occupy a rocky outcrop on the opposite shore, where the Fruška Gora hills begin. Several bridges connect the two sides, and a canal runs along the northern edge of the city.
Petrovaradin Fortress, built mainly in the eighteenth century, is one of the largest of its kind in Europe and hosts the EXIT music festival each summer. The city's bridges were destroyed during the 1999 bombing and have since been rebuilt. In 2022 Novi Sad was a European Capital of Culture, highlighting its multilingual heritage and cultural life.
