Novogrudok stands on one of the higher points in Belarus, on an upland in Grodno Region. The historic core occupies a hill, with the ruins of a medieval castle on a rise at its edge. Streets radiate outward from the old market area and run down the slopes toward the surrounding countryside.
Novogrudok was one of the earliest centres of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania and has long been associated with the state's early years. The castle ruins and their surviving towers are among its most recognisable features, along with a large earthen mound built in memory of the poet Adam Mickiewicz, who spent his childhood here.
