Nowy Targ is the main town of Podhale, the highland region of southern Poland just north of the Tatra Mountains. It lies in a broad basin where the Czarny Dunajec and the Biały Dunajec join to form the Dunajec river. From the town, the high peaks of the Tatras are visible to the south on clear days.
The historic centre is built around a large square market place with a town hall in the middle. That reflects the town's long role as a market for the whole region, and its name means "new market". Streets spread out from the square in a fairly regular pattern, then loosen into residential districts and the open, level land of the basin.
