Nueva Imperial is in the Araucanía region of southern Chile, west of Temuco. The town sits in a river landscape, where the Cholchol and Cautín systems meet to form the Imperial river. On a map, the town's regular grid lies beside meandering waterways, surrounded by fields, pastures and rural roads.
Like many towns in Araucanía, it was founded as part of Chile's expansion into the region in the late nineteenth century, and its plan follows a classic grid with a central square. The area has a strong Mapuche presence, and the surrounding countryside is dotted with rural communities linked by small roads.
