Nyagatare is the main town of the district of the same name in Rwanda's Eastern Province, near the border with Uganda. Much of Rwanda is defined by steep hills, but this corner of the country is lower and more gently rolling. The town spreads across relatively open ground, with a loose network of roads and wide spaces between neighbourhoods.
The Muvumba River runs through the area, and the surrounding land has long been associated with cattle keeping, with ranches and pasture extending across the savanna. The town has grown quickly in recent decades as a regional centre. It has a campus of the University of Rwanda, and new residential areas extend outward from the main roads.
