Nyamira is the headquarters of Nyamira County, in the fertile highlands of western Kenya east of Lake Victoria. From above, the town does not follow a grid. Its roads follow ridges and dip into small valleys, and the built-up area thins quickly into farmland. Streams and small rivers cut through the terrain in narrow, winding lines.
The surrounding Gusii highlands are known for tea, bananas and intensive smallholder farming. Because of the steady rainfall and red soils, the land is densely cultivated.
