Obertshausen is in the Offenbach district of Hesse, a short distance east of Offenbach and Frankfurt. The modern town combines two former villages, Obertshausen and Hausen, and the map still shows it. There are two older centres, each with its own cluster of streets, joined by later residential areas and main roads.
Around the built-up area, forest takes up a large share of the map, a common feature on the eastern edge of the Rhine-Main area. Housing estates, small commercial zones and a rail line give structure to the middle. Streams and green corridors cross between neighbourhoods and separate one quarter from the next.
The town was long associated with leather goods production, part of a regional trade centred on nearby Offenbach.
