Okayama spreads across a flat plain on the Seto Inland Sea side of western Honshu. From above, its most memorable feature is at the centre: the Asahi River curves around an island occupied by Korakuen, one of Japan's three great landscape gardens, with Okayama Castle standing on the opposite bank.
The castle, known for its dark exterior and nicknamed the Crow Castle, anchors the older part of the city. Around it, the streets form a moderately regular grid that extends toward the railway station, where the Sanyo Shinkansen stops. The city is also closely associated with the folk tale of Momotaro, the Peach Boy.
