Okino lies in Kumamoto Prefecture on the plain that stretches east from Kumamoto city toward the Aso highlands. On the map, the area is a mix of residential streets, small fields and roads connecting to the city and surrounding towns. The pattern is typical of this part of Kyushu, where housing has spread into what was once farmland.
The streets are not laid out in a single grid. Older roads follow the lines of fields and water channels, while newer residential areas form more regular blocks. Wider roads cross the area and connect it to the main routes of the prefecture, giving the map a few strong lines among many small ones.
