Onyar is a town in the Ili region of northwestern Xinjiang, east of the city of Yining. The Ili valley is one of the greenest parts of the region. It is a wide plain between mountain ranges, watered by rivers flowing down from the Tian Shan and farmed intensively for grain, fruit and other crops.
On the map the town has a fairly regular layout, with straight streets and rectangular blocks set in a landscape divided by roads and field boundaries.
