Opfikon lies just north of the city of Zurich, directly beside Zurich Airport. It includes the district of Glattbrugg and is crossed by the Glatt river. From above, the town is densely built and tightly bounded, hemmed in by motorways, rail lines and the airport to the north.
Much of Opfikon's recent change is visible in Glattpark, a planned district built on former farmland between the older town and Zurich. Its regular blocks, straight streets and park with a lake stand out clearly from the more irregular pattern of Glattbrugg. The Glatt valley's railway and tram lines run through, linking the town closely to the city.
