Orhei lies in central Moldova, north of Chișinău, on the Răut river. The map shows a town with a fairly regular street plan. Long parallel streets run through the centre, and the river curves along the edge of the built-up area with open land beyond it.
Around the town, the landscape rolls in low hills with orchards, fields and villages. Roads leave Orhei towards the capital and the north. The Răut continues winding towards the south-east through an increasingly dramatic valley.
An Orhei map poster frames the town at the centre of this landscape. A short distance down the Răut is Orheiul Vechi, an archaeological and monastic site where cave cells are cut into a limestone cliff above a tight loop of the river, one of Moldova's best-known places.
