Orsay lies in Essonne, southwest of Paris, in the valley of the Yvette. The river and the RER B line run side by side along the valley floor, and the town centre sits between them with its older streets. To the south, wooded slopes climb steeply to the Saclay plateau. On a map the contrast between valley and upland is very clear.
Orsay is best known for science. A large part of the Université Paris-Saclay is here, with its faculty buildings, laboratories and green spaces spread along the valley and up onto the plateau. The campus paths, car parks and scattered buildings form a very different pattern from the dense town streets and suburban houses nearby.
