Ortigueira lies in the Campos Gerais region of central Paraná, an area of rolling hills, grassland, forest and river valleys. The town is small, with a centre of streets laid out along the ridges and slopes, and much of the municipality beyond it is rural, with farms and plantations spread across a wide territory.
In recent years the area has become associated with forestry and pulp production, with plantations of eucalyptus and pine covering large parts of the surrounding land. Rivers cut through the landscape in deep valleys, and the town itself remains compact compared with the size of the municipality around it.
