Osny lies in Val-d'Oise, north-west of Paris, and is one of the communes that make up the Cergy-Pontoise urban area. On the map it has two characters. There is a compact older centre in the valley of the Viosne, a small river running towards Pontoise and the Oise. Around it are the curving residential streets, cul-de-sacs and green spaces typical of the new-town era.
The contrast is clear from above. The old roads follow the valley and the river line. The later neighbourhoods spread out in loops across the slopes, with wide gaps of parkland and woodland between them.
