Ōta is an industrial city in southeastern Gunma, on the flat northern stretch of the Kanto Plain. Much of it is plain ground, where a grid of roads, fields and factory sites spreads out evenly. The Tone River, one of Japan's longest, forms the city's southern edge and the border with Saitama, a wide ribbon of water and riverbank running across the bottom of the map.
The city is best known as the home of Subaru, whose main manufacturing plants dominate large parts of the urban area. North of the centre, Mount Kanayama rises sharply from the plain. It is a wooded hill topped by the ruins of Kanayama Castle, a medieval mountain fortress. The shift from flat industrial land to the tight contours of the hill gives the map a clear focal point.
