Oxnard is the largest city in Ventura County, on the broad, flat Oxnard Plain between the Santa Clara River and the Pacific Ocean. The map reads as a series of neat grids and suburban loops, framed by long, straight farm roads that divide the surrounding fields into large rectangles. The city grew up around a sugar beet factory founded by the Oxnard brothers at the end of the nineteenth century.
