Pärnu stands where the Pärnu River enters Pärnu Bay, on Estonia's southwestern coast. The map is organised around that meeting of water. The river cuts the town in two and meets the sea between a pair of long breakwaters. South of the river, a compact grid of historic streets surrounds Rüütli. The line of the old fortifications can still be traced near the Tallinn Gate.
