Palestine is the seat of Anderson County in East Texas, set among rolling hills and the pine and hardwood forest typical of the region. From above, it looks like a classic Texas railroad town. A historic downtown sits around the courthouse, and a grid of streets spreads outward, bending where it meets creeks and slopes. Major highways cross the town and head for Dallas, Houston and Tyler.
Rail shaped Palestine. The town became an important railroad hub, and lines and yards still run through it. Today it is also the western end of the Texas State Railroad, a heritage steam line through the forest to Rusk. NASA's Columbia Scientific Balloon Facility, which launches high-altitude research balloons, sits just outside town.
