Panadura lies on Sri Lanka's west coast, south of Colombo, where the Galle Road runs parallel to the Indian Ocean. On a map the town is shaped by water on several sides: the long, straight coastline to the west, the Panadura river reaching the sea, and the lagoons and waterways connected to Bolgoda Lake inland. Between them, a dense network of streets fills the land.
The town has a notable place in Sri Lankan history as the venue of the Panadura Debate of 1873, a public debate between Buddhist and Christian speakers that drew wide attention and became an important moment in the Buddhist revival on the island.
