Paoua is in the northwest of the Central African Republic, in Lim-Pendé prefecture, not far from the borders with Chad and Cameroon. From above, the town looks low and spread out. Unpaved roads meet at a central market area, and houses with compounds line the routes leading out into the surrounding fields. Small streams and seasonal watercourses cross the landscape in thin, winding lines.
The town is an important local market for a largely agricultural region, where crops such as cotton, millet and cassava are grown. Its population includes people from the wider area who have settled here for trade, schools and services. In recent years Paoua has also served as a regional hub for humanitarian organisations working in the northwest.
