Pathum Wan is one of the central districts of Bangkok, and for many visitors it is the city's commercial heart. On a map it reads as large blocks rather than tight lanes: shopping complexes, university grounds, hospitals and parks set between wide roads such as Rama I, Phaya Thai, Rama IV and Ratchadamri, with the Saen Saep canal along its northern edge.
The district contains Siam Square and its shopping centres, the campus of Chulalongkorn University, the oldest university in Thailand, and Lumphini Park, the largest green space in central Bangkok. The two BTS Skytrain lines cross at Siam station, the network's main interchange, and the Jim Thompson House stands beside the canal.
