Patuakhali lies in the southern part of the Ganges delta, in the Barisal Division, where the land is flat, low and crossed by rivers. From above, the town sits beside a wide tidal river, with its streets spreading back from the bank and a web of smaller channels and canals surrounding it. Water is everywhere on the map.
The town is the centre of Patuakhali District, which reaches down to the Bay of Bengal. The district includes Kuakata, a long beach known in Bangladesh as one of the few places where both sunrise and sunset can be seen over the sea. Rivers here are still the main routes for passenger launches and cargo.
