Pengze is a county in the north of Jiangxi province, under the administration of Jiujiang, lying on the southern bank of the Yangtze River a little downstream from where Poyang Lake drains into it. The county town sits close to the river, and its map is shaped by the broad curve of the water, low hills and a scattering of lakes and ponds.
The name recalls Pengli Ze, an old name for the great lake system nearby, and the landscape remains closely tied to water. Embankments run along the Yangtze, and inland the terrain alternates between wooded ridges, farmland and small reservoirs, so the town's compact streets give way quickly to open country.
Pengze is best known to Chinese readers through the poet Tao Yuanming, who served briefly as its magistrate around 405 before resigning to return to farming, an episode remembered in his writing.
