Perchtoldsdorf lies just beyond the south-western boundary of Vienna, in Lower Austria. From above, a compact old centre forms the core, with a market square and irregular historic streets. Newer residential areas spread out from it, and the hills of the Vienna Woods rise to the west.
The town is known for its wine and its Heurigen, the traditional wine taverns of the Vienna region. Vineyards cover the slopes around the town. Its Gothic parish church and tall defensive tower stand at the heart of the old centre, and the composer Hugo Wolf lived and worked here.
