Pereiro is a municipality in the east of Ceará, close to the border with Rio Grande do Norte. The town itself is small and compact, with a short grid of streets around its centre and roads leaving toward neighbouring municipalities. Around it lies the semi-arid sertão, a landscape of low hills, scrubland and watercourses that flow only in the rainy season.
The surrounding caatinga turns grey in the dry months and green again after the rains, and life here has long been organised around water: small dams, reservoirs and the careful use of seasonal rivers. On a map those reservoirs appear as irregular shapes in the open land around town, some of the few features that break the empty space.
