Phultala lies in the Khulna district of southwestern Bangladesh, a short distance north of Khulna city. The land is low and flat, part of the Ganges delta, and water appears across the map in rivers, channels and many small ponds. The built-up area follows the main road corridor running north from the city.
This linear pattern is typical of the delta. Houses, markets and small industries line the principal road, while lanes branch off toward villages, fields and the water. Between them, ponds and paddy land create an intricate pattern of small plots that looks almost like a textile from above.
