Pingli lies in the far south of Shaanxi, in the mountainous country of Ankang, near the borders with Hubei and Chongqing. The land is steep and folded, and the town fits where the valleys allow it to. On the map, the built-up area follows the valley floor in a narrow band, with roads tracing the line of a river.
Around the town, the terrain rises quickly. Minor roads snake up side valleys to scattered villages, and large parts of the map are left almost empty, marked only by the thin lines of streams and tracks.
