Pinheiral lies in the south of Rio de Janeiro state, in the valley of the Paraíba do Sul river, close to the industrial city of Volta Redonda. From above, the town follows the lie of the land: streets gather on the flatter ground near the river, while neighbourhoods reach up into the low, rounded hills that surround it.
