Pisz is in the southern part of the Masurian Lake District, in northeastern Poland. On the map, water sets the shape of the town. Lake Roś spreads out to the north, and the Pisa River leaves the lake and runs through town before heading south toward the Narew.
The centre is compact, with a market square and short streets close to the river. Across the water, newer districts and the railway extend the town. Around it, a broad expanse of forest starts almost at the last houses, and roads run through it in long, straight lines.
Pisz was known as Johannisburg until 1945, and the surrounding Pisz Forest is one of the largest woodland areas in the region. A Pisz map poster frames lake, river and forest together: a small town at a meeting point of Masurian water and woods.

The river flows out of the lake and through the centre. A clear line divides the old town from the districts across it.
