Pizhou is a county-level city in northern Jiangsu, administered by Xuzhou and bordering Shandong. It lies on a level plain, so the map is shaped by water and roads more than by relief: the Beijing–Hangzhou Grand Canal passes through the area, and rivers and irrigation channels cross the surrounding farmland in long, measured lines.
The region has deep history. In ancient times it lay within the state of Pi, which gave the city its name, and archaeological sites nearby record settlement over thousands of years. Today Pizhou is known across China for its ginkgo trees, planted along roads and in orchards, which turn the countryside gold each autumn.
