Płońsk lies in northern Mazovia, about an hour northwest of Warsaw, on the small Płonka river. The surrounding land is flat and agricultural, and from above the town shows a clear historic core around a long market square, with streets leading from it toward the edges and newer residential districts beyond.
The town is widely known as the birthplace of David Ben-Gurion, the first prime minister of Israel, and for its long Jewish history, which shaped much of its life before the Second World War.
