Ponedera is a municipality in the Colombian department of Atlántico, south of Barranquilla, on the western side of the Magdalena River, the country's principal waterway. The river gives the map its dominant feature: a wide, slow band of water running along the eastern edge, with marshes, channels and seasonal lagoons spreading across the low ground nearby.
The town center is a compact grid of streets gathered around its main square, following the traditional plan found across the towns of Caribbean Colombia. From there, roads lead toward neighbouring municipalities in the south of the department and toward the route that follows the river corridor north to Barranquilla and the coast.
