Puerto Triunfo lies on the left bank of the Magdalena, Colombia's main river, in the Magdalena Medio region of eastern Antioquia. The town is small and compact, a few blocks of streets set beside the river, and the map around it is dominated by the broad water, its islands and sandbars, and the flat, green land of the valley.
The municipality is crossed by the highway linking Medellín and Bogotá, and the wider area has become known for tourism, from the clear rivers and limestone canyon of Río Claro nearby to the Hacienda Nápoles theme park, built on a former estate within the municipality. The settlement of Doradal, also part of Puerto Triunfo, lies close to the highway.
