Purāini lies in eastern Bihar, south of the Ganges, on the wide alluvial plain that covers much of the state. The land here is almost perfectly flat. From above, the town is a compact knot of lanes, with village roads leading outwards through a patchwork of small cultivated fields.
Like many towns in the region, Purāini grew as a local centre for trade and services for the surrounding villages, and its map reflects that role. There is no formal grid. Instead there are organic streets that have built up over time, with the densest area where the main roads meet.
