Purificación is in Tolima, in the hot lowlands of central Colombia, on the Magdalena River. The river is the country's main waterway and the strongest feature on the map. It runs past the town in broad curves, with sandbars and side channels, while the streets form a compact, regular grid on the bank.
The grid follows the pattern common to Colombian towns. Square blocks are organised around a central plaza, and a few main streets lead out to the regional roads. Beyond the town, the land is flat and open, with farms and pasture along the river valley and higher ground farther away.
