Purmerend grew up on a strip of higher ground among the lakes of North Holland. When those lakes were drained in the seventeenth century, the town ended up surrounded by polders. On a map, the old centre is a small knot of canals and streets. Around it, later neighbourhoods fill in to the edges of the reclaimed land.
The polders are the most striking part of the map. The Beemster, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is laid out in an almost perfect grid of roads, ditches and farm plots, a very early example of planned land division. The Purmer and Wormer have their own straight lines and field patterns. The North Holland Canal passes on the west.
Purmerend has long been a market town, known for its cattle and cheese markets. Today it is also a commuter town for Amsterdam. A Purmerend map poster captures the change from the curving historic core to the perfectly ruled polder landscape around it.

Historic canals
The old centre of Purmerend has a small network of canals and narrow streets, a more organic pattern than the polders around it.

The canal runs along the western side of the town, a long straight line that adds structure to the composition.
