Pūrna lies in Parbhani district in the Marathwada region of Maharashtra, and it takes its name from the Purna River, which flows near the town. From above, the land is flat, open and cultivated, and the town appears as a compact cluster within it. The river's winding line adds a natural curve to an otherwise level landscape.
The town is best known as a railway junction, and the tracks are a defining feature of the map. Rail lines arrive from different directions and meet here, with sidings and yards spreading beside them. Streets on each side of the railway developed somewhat separately, which gives the plan a divided, two-part character.
