Rānyah lies in the Kurdistan Region of Iraq, in Sulaymaniyah Governorate, on a plain near the northern end of Lake Dukan. From above, the town spreads across fairly open ground, with the mountains rising around the plain. The centre is dense and irregular, and newer neighbourhoods extend outward in more regular blocks along the main roads.
The town is widely remembered as the first place to rise in the Kurdish uprising of March 1991, a moment that holds an important place in the region's recent history. Today it is a centre for the surrounding agricultural area, with the lake and its reservoir shaping the landscape to the south.
