Rawson lies just south of the city of San Juan and forms part of the Greater San Juan urban area. It sits on the flat floor of the Tulum Valley, with the Andes foothills to the west. From above, the department is organised on a regular grid, and its main town, Villa Krause, is laid out with straight streets and square blocks that extend toward the surrounding farmland.
The Tulum Valley is an oasis in an arid region, made productive by irrigation channels drawn from the San Juan River. Vineyards and orchards cover much of the land around the urban area, and the region is one of Argentina's main wine and grape-growing areas.
