Reading lies about twelve miles north of Boston in Middlesex County. Its map mixes the old and the new. At the centre is a classic New England town common with streets radiating from it, and around it, curving residential streets fill the gently rolling land, dotted with ponds and woodland.
Two major highways define the town's edges. Interstate 93 runs along its western side, and Route 128, part of Interstate 95, runs along the south, with a large interchange where they meet. The commuter rail line to Boston passes through the centre, a route that shaped Reading as a railway suburb.
