Rembangan lies on the north coast of Central Java, facing the Java Sea. The coastline here is low and fairly straight, and on a map the sea forms a clean edge along the top of the town. The main coastal road, one of the oldest routes across Java, runs close to the shore and links the town to its neighbours east and west.
The shoreline of this part of Java is used intensively. Fishing boats moor in small harbours and river mouths, and ponds and pans for fish and salt spread along the coast in a regular pattern of small rectangles. Inland, streets form a dense network around the town centre, and beyond it rice fields and plantations stretch towards the low hills.
