Renzhao lies on the Jiaodong Peninsula in eastern Shandong, inland from the coast and within the wider area around Qingdao. The land here is mostly low and gently rolling, with farmland, villages and small rivers. From above, the town appears as a compact cluster of streets where local roads meet, set within a countryside divided into irregular fields and village plots.
The peninsula is one of northern China's older farming regions, and its towns tend to be closely linked to the villages around them.
