Rhenen sits at the point where the Utrechtse Heuvelrug, a low glacial ridge, meets the Nederrijn. On a map, this is one of the rare places in the Netherlands where terrain clearly shapes the town. The compact old centre lies against the river, wooded slopes rise behind it, and flat floodplains stretch away on the opposite bank.
The Grebbeberg, at the western edge of town, was the scene of heavy fighting in May 1940 and is now home to a military cemetery. Nearby is Ouwehands Dierenpark, a well-known zoo. In the centre, the tall Cuneratoren, the tower of St. Cunera's Church, has long been a landmark visible across the river landscape.

The Grebbeberg
The wooded hill on the western side of town, known for the 1940 battle, appears as a quiet area of paths and green space above the river floodplain.
