Riachão do Jacuípe is in the interior of Bahia, in the semi-arid country known as the sertão. The town takes its name from the Jacuípe River, which crosses the region, and on the map the river's course and the smaller streams feeding it are some of the few curving lines in a landscape of roads, fields and pasture.
The town itself is compact. A small central area of streets and squares sits at the heart of the settlement, with newer neighbourhoods spreading outwards in looser blocks.
