Rîbniţa lies on the left bank of the Dniester in the northern part of Transnistria, directly across the river from the Moldovan town of Rezina. From above, the Dniester is the dominant feature. It curves broadly past the town, and a bridge links the two banks. The town rises from the riverside up onto the plateau.
The layout mixes older low-rise streets near the river with the large blocks of Soviet-era housing further up the slope. A major steelworks, one of the largest industrial sites in the region, occupies a large area at the edge of town, and its rail sidings and halls form their own distinct pattern on the map.
