Rijen lies in the west of North Brabant, roughly between Breda and Tilburg, and together with neighbouring Gilze forms the municipality of Gilze en Rijen. On the map it looks like a typical Dutch village that has grown outward in layers: an older centre, then neat postwar neighbourhoods, and around them woodland, fields and heath.

To the south lies Gilze-Rijen Air Base, a military airfield whose long runways and taxiways make one of the most striking shapes in the area, a set of straight bold strokes against the softer residential streets.
