Rio do Antônio is a municipality in the south-western interior of Bahia, well inland from the Atlantic coast, in the semi-arid country known as the sertão. The town itself is small and compact. It is built around a simple arrangement of streets, a central square and a church, which is a common pattern for towns in this part of Brazil.
Beyond the edge of town, the map opens up quickly. Rural roads leave in several directions across dry farmland and scrub, heading toward farms and neighbouring communities. With no coast and no large city nearby, the town and its roads are the only strong elements in the frame.
